Rituals and Habits

My attention was caught this morning with a reflection of the opportunity we all have to improve our quality of life, professionally and personally, by better understanding the difference between rituals and habits.

Rituals are those activities that cultivate presence in the current moment. They are not only those big-special events. Rituals can be daily actions done in full awareness. They are those times when you engage fully your senses to be here and now…

I like Kristen Manieri’s definition that Jay Shetti shared on the daily Calm App: Rituals drive more meaning and purpose to life when you bring your presence and heart to an activity. They are powerful tools that confirm our commitment to certain values and priorities.

Being present can be hard on a regular basis, however, we have the choice to find realistic and attainable ways in which small, everyday actions can become a ritual by intentionally bringing our presence to them. For example, when you are walking your dog, drinking your coffee, brushing your teeth, taking a shower, etc.

All those examples can be done also without presence; in an unconscious way… as a Habit. This occurs when we approach them in autopilot, multitasking and with a split focus. Simply said, a habit is repetition without intention and attention. For example, are you on the phone while you walk your dog, are you focused on your computer while drinking coffee, or listening to music or a podcast while you are brushing your teeth or taking a shower?

The difference is subtle… I have to admit that I often multitask. In those moments, I miss details and the opportunity to fully embrace what the person, experience and/or object has to offer. On the other hand, I can confirm that when I choose to be present, I am able to better maintain my levels of energy, and my interactions have a deeper connection (they are memorable.) I get better answers, as I give time for my creativity and full attention to drive me.

What do you do more throughout the day: rituals or habits?

What would happen in your life, if you regularly choose to let more of your presence and heart (rituals) drive your daily interactions and results?
