A True Vacation Break?

Vacation is over and it is time to get back to work and the normal routine… Lots to catch up?

Often, I hear my colleagues express the frustration of coming back to work from vacation as emails have piled up and restarting may take many hours of catching up that may end up wearing out the relaxation vacation effect.  In my experience, I can attest that this is often the case…

However, following the principle: where focus goes energy follows…. This time I choose to focus on the gains of my time off and will manage catching up with ease.  I have not taken a two-week vacation break in many years.  The time spent away from my regular routine with my family is invaluable. I had time to relax and recharge next to my loved ones.  We lived great fun experiences that have filled us with renewed energy of joy, love and care.  The best!  At the end those memories will make the stories that we will treasure and bond us with the goodness in life.

Some of the intangibles of a break that many times we don’t take time to reflect (due to the “rush on getting back on track”) is the power of the mental and physical reset we go through.  The new experiences and change of focus enable us to gain perspective and improve our productivity and personal effectiveness.

And for those readers that may be thinking this is a nice theory… as the expectation for many (self-imposed or not) is to continue responding to work requests over the break.  I should admit that I did it a few times and had to resist logging into my computer to check what was going on.  We set the expectations for ourselves and others by the choices we make.  Give yourself the gift to truly have a break and reset yourself.  I know that it is easier said than done… as many of us suffer from the FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) effect. At the end, it is about the Choices and the Expectations we set for ourselves and others.

Dare to have a true vacation!  Set up a support system that enables you to truly disconnect by managing your schedule and having someone truly ready and able to respond to your work demands in your absence.  This sets a great example for your family and work team of caring for each other’s well-being.
