Do you like celebrating your birthday?

As defined in the dictionary, a birthday is the anniversary of the day on which a person was born.  In my mind it is a reason to celebrate!   However, this is not shared by many. Meaning that their preference is to keep it as one more regular day.  In some cases, they don’t want to have a reference to age, they want to avoid being the spotlight, like privacy, it was not a practice for their family and many other reasons.

In my case, I love to celebrate friends and loved ones on their day to appreciate them being in my life.  It makes me super happy to plan a surprise… it doesn’t need to be something big… It is about taking the time to imagine what can make the other person smile and feel appreciated.

Well today was my brother’s birthday.  We’ve not had the opportunity to celebrate him in person for many, many years.  He is one of the people for whom birthdays are not a big deal.  But oh well, I got the balloons, a gift and with my parents and niece, we prepared a surprise dinner with a cake and candles.  This last one is a must to ask for wishes as they are blown out…  My niece was the super chef… she led us in the preparation of a Spanish tapas dinner… It was a fun family activity…

Then, the birthday celebration is not about the objects, but the thought, care and love spent during that day to show appreciation.  I saw my brother smile and go back to being a bit like a little kid… with the family around him. The best!

Until the 25th we will have the same age… his favorite time of year.  As we were growing up, he always liked to say… Now you are not my older sister anymore. Hahaha cute!

Celebration is an important aspect to cultivate in life and business.  It acknowledges milestones, provides an opportunity to reflect and realign, and recognizes progress.  Many times, the way we approach birthday celebrations is how we approach celebrations in general.

Where are you in the birthday celebration spectrum… Do you like to celebrate it or not?  Share your preference in the comments below…
