Before You Sleep…

Did you know that your thoughts and feelings before you go to sleep shape your next day?

I have experienced exactly this. Then, I am intentional with what I do and think before going to sleep so I can set myself for a restful and recharging night. I look for ways to unwind my thoughts and have a routine that helps my body know that it is time to sleep.

Sleeping has been a challenge throughout different stages of my life. In the past, frequently, I found myself looking at the clock, passing the hours, while battling to fall asleep and having to wake up early. On these occasions, my mind could not disconnect from thinking, usually about work matters or other worrying thoughts. Then now, I avoid engaging, watching or listening to unpleasant / negatively charged discussions. Funny enough, at night those thoughts and worries get magnified...

Another trick is to I have a notebook by my bed to write and purge my mind that way. If not, I know that the lack of proper sleep for a prolonged period affects my cognitive ability and mood. I become scattered, absent, low energy and with lack of patience. Not a good combination.

What has made the most difference is having clarity of what is important to me; usually tied to my purpose, values and mission. Surrounding myself with positive-loving people; aligning my actions and thoughts with activities that I enjoy such as swimming, going for a walk, listening to something funny/positive, a short meditation and writing/thinking about what I am grateful have helped me to improve my quality of sleep and rest. Consequently, during the next day I feel energized, connected and empowered.

⚠️ Track this week your thoughts and feelings before you go to sleep and experience the impact they have on your next day.⚠️
