Context and Contrast

I have gained a deeper sense of appreciation for situations, experiences and people that trigger me into a negative reaction such as annoyance, frustration, anger, boredom, etc… I know now that they represent the misalignment to the state I would like to be.

For many years, my first reaction was to try to change whatever was happening and if not successful I will try to avoid and/or dwell on it in hopes that the situation may improve. I was applying the common approach of focus and go fix it… Little I knew that there is no need to go out in the world fixing people or situations. They are who and what they are... My negative perception of them was the result of my past experiences and beliefs; ergo the context I created for them.

Today, being triggered by a situation, experience or person are a great signal that adjustments and/ or realignments are needed on my side. They provide the contrast that shows me that I have deviated from my desired track. They have become a learning opportunity. Now my immediate reaction is to stop and ask: What is this trying to show me?

Magically this question reveals what needs to shift to keep me on course and in alignment with my purpose and mission personally and professionally. I know I am back on track when I feel happy, joyful, energized or any other positive-empowering state.

Our emotional state changes (up or down) provide us with the context and contrast to continue shaping the reality we would like to experience.

Try it tomorrow! Take the time to reflect on the reactions you may have towards a situation or person… what is the mood that they trigger in you and why?
